SASH Convening

Join us in Nairobi, Kenya from January 18 – 21, 2027 at the Fairview Hotel for a convening of SASH scholars, partners and stakeholders to learn about the impact our 24 scholars are having on health outcomes in their countries and beyond. Across 19 medical institutions and nine countries, SASH scholars have built lasting partnerships and programs that are driving health systems change. This convening will provide a platform to foster further collaboration and reflect on scholars’ progress and how to continue health systems strengthening across Africa.

SASH PROGRAM: Launched in partnership with Pfizer in 2023, the Stanford African Scholars in Global Health (SASH) program advances equitable access to quality healthcare through locally led capacity strengthening, bidirectional learning and workforce transformation across the African continent.
SASH equips mid-career African physicians with targeted, advanced clinical skills through 6-weeks of immersive training at Stanford, followed by 12-months of sustained Stanford faculty mentorship and grant funding from Pfizer to apply those skills at home. SASH physicians lead year-long quality improvement projects—expanding medical specialty capacity, training health care workers at all levels, and implementing system-level changes that directly improve health outcomes in their local contexts.
IMPACT: To date, SASH has trained 24 African physicians from 19 medical institutions across 9 countries.
SASH scholars’ clinical training and quality improvement projects address critical and timely health challenges aligned with national health priorities and local needs:
- Training health care workers at their hospitals, institutions and community health facilities.
- Improving patient outcomes through enhanced service delivery, linkages to care, and health education.
- Strengthening institutional capacity and driving systems-level change through the development of new protocols and programs.
Keynote Speaker
Dr. Matshidiso Moeti is the first woman to serve as Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the African Region. Over a decade of leadership, she launched the Transformation Agenda, which became a model for global WHO reforms. This agenda propelled improvements in disease outbreak response, maternal health, and country operations, culminating in milestones such as the African Region’s certification as free from indigenous wild polio in 2020. She also led WHO’s renowned “3 by 5” Initiative in the African Region at the peak of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, expanding access to antiretroviral therapy through nurse-provided decentralised treatment, and saving lives. A champion of gender equity, she founded the Africa Women Health Champions initiative, supporting early entry into and advancement within WHO AFRO. With a 45-year public health career and academic credentials from the University of London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, her honours include honorary degrees and fellowships, recognition as a COVID-19 Heroine by the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Presidential Center for Women and Development, and membership in the US National Academy of Medicine.
